13 The Power of Friendship

“I believe in the power of friendship”, Thor said. “There is no such thing as a self-made man”, he said. “The basis for a happy life is to be surrounded by good friends.” Thor believes that the best things we as humans do happen when we work together. And he believes in following your gut. If you have a clear goal that you work towards for a long time, you’ll eventually get your reward. No one of us lives in a vacuum – to accomplish anything, we need help from friends and other people in general.

Thor’s smallest mirrors the colourful pattern of a shirt, sprinkled with gold to indicate the magical power of friendship. One day, we were discussing style and wardrobe, and when I saw that shirt, I couldn’t help but think of him because it would fit him perfectly. I followed my gut and sent a picture of that shirt to him. First, he was hesitant because he found the shirt too much – too bold, too colourful – but he tried it on. “I actually bought it because I really liked it once I wore it. So, I ended up loving it!”

We can understand the shirt as evidence of what he said, that there was no such thing as a self-made man, if we think about the number of people involved in making this shirt, selling it, choosing it, and wearing it.

Thor’s smallest mirrors the pattern of this shirt and thus can become a symbol for these powerful connections. “I like the ‘branches’ or ‘streams’ that cross the piece. I see them as symbolising the connections between people that friendship means”, he concluded.
