“I believe in the liberation of Palestine”, he said. He told me that he was born in the Berlin district of Neukölln, Germany, but grew up in Australia, and pertained to an Israeli Arabic minority. The liberation of Palestine matters to him a lot.
As our conversation went on, he explained that his parents chose his name deliberately so he sounded German and “had better chances in the world".
His middle name is an Israeli name. He told me that he had more success in applying for jobs when using his German name.
His smallest cites the Palestinian flag and the symbols of the liberation movement. A broken mirror piece similar in shape to the Palestinian state is surrounded by a yellow desert and wild, green leaves, almost burning in shape. The black wings of a bird melt into the red golden sun rising in the East.
The collision of bird and green and sunrise is shattered gold. This gold can symbolise a transformational power, but also a value under violent negotiation. A value being fought for, a value attached to the boarder. Last but not least, the gold both covers and connects the actual touchpoint of the mirror piece and the bird’s body.
